That’s how long readers had to wait to finally see Jenny HanThe novel of 2009 The Summer I Turned Pretty to be adapted into a television series. A coming-of-age drama centered on a love triangle between Belle (Lola Tung) and brothers Konrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casaleño), with whom she grew up spending summers in Cousins Beach, premiered June 17 on Amazon Prime Video and is now a contender for the 2022 TV Scoop Awards. In addition to writing the pilot episode, Khan co-wrote the show and made important decisions about what would stay in the book and what would be cut. Fortunately, she didn’t have to kill any of her loved ones, and this dreamy, wistful and magical aura of the source material is fully transferred to the screen, which was the author’s goal.
“I wanted it to be like a locket that you find and you open it up and inside is this image,” Khan told E! News. “It’s a memory, but at the same time I wanted it to be resonant, relevant and raw.”
