Jo Durie had a prolific junior career, winning British junior titles on all three surfaces (grass, hard and indoor) in 1976. She turned professional in 1977 and made her Wimbledon debut against eventual champion Virginia Wade. Durie missed eight months of the 1980 season due to a serious back injury. However, she made a successful comeback in 1981, making it through to the fourth round in singles at Wimbledon and the US Open, while also achieving her highest singles ranking to date of 31.

Her best season as a singles player came in 1983 when she finished sixth in the world and sixth in prize money. Durie, an unseeded player, defeated Tracy Austin and Pam Shriver en route to reaching the French Open semifinals. Later that year, she reached the US Open Grand Slam singles semifinals, but ultimately fell to Chris Evert in straight sets. Her meteoric rise in the singles rankings that year ended in December when she lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Her singles game successes in 1983 earned Durie a coveted fifth seed spot at the 1984 WTA Tour Championship.

Durie, along with her compatriot and British compatriot Jeremy Bates, was part of the team that became the first British doubles team to win the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 1987 in fifty-one years. In 1991 they made history by becoming the first British doubles pair to ever win the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open. Both records have stood since 2013. Together, Bates and Durie reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon mixed doubles a further three times, in 1986, 1990 and 1993. Also, as reigning winners of the Australian Open in 1992, they competed well enough to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament to advance.

During her career, Durie appeared in a total of eighteen women’s doubles finals, winning five times. In addition to her victories at the Grand Slams in 1987 and 1991, 1983 was her most successful year as a doubles player. That year she took part in six finals and emerged victorious three times.
