Alan can’t sleep in the fourth episode of The Patient. He sighed quickly because he was afraid of what Sam would do to his new prisoner.

And yet, Alan is calm when he talks to Sam. Sam tells how strong the urge is to kill the man (his name is Elias). But he wasn’t going to kill her until he talked to Alan, like he said he wouldn’t.

Sam wants Alan to help him. It is said that his plan to protect his mother did not work, but we have no proof that he tried it. So, Alan suggests that they try to get his feelings out of his mind. He tells her to go to work and go about her day as usual.

Sam leaves against his will, and Alan goes from being a humble therapist to a scared and angry prisoner. Elias finally asked where he was from in the other room. Alan tells him that this “fool” is the same as his grip.

Candace stopped them for a moment to apologize for Sam. He says that he really wants to change and that his father is not the reason why he is like this. “He’s always just… Sam.”

Alan continues to talk to Elias, who is blindfolded and bound, after he leaves. He doesn’t say who grabbed him, but he talks about the room he was in. He told Elias that his son would have noticed that he was gone now. Elias is also afraid that his parents will call the police.

Alan kills time by talking about his family. About Beth, his wife who died a few months ago from cancer. And his son Ezra, who became an Orthodox Jew. Because of this, his relationship with Beth was very difficult.

Sam has a bad day at work and calls Alan to tell him about it. He can’t do it anymore. He said he will return to finish what he started.

Alan tells her to stay at work and even goes to a concert afterwards to avoid things. Sam took it down.

Elias starts to worry and asks Alan to tell his parents that he loves them if he dies. Alan said yes to her request, barely putting it together.

Sam came home with a white noise machine, which he placed in Elias’ room so he wouldn’t hear their conversation. He keeps telling Alan that nothing is working and that going to work every day is a stupid idea.

Alan tries to calm him down. Elias didn’t see the man’s face when he caught him, so he still thought of a way to free him.

Alan finally tells Sam to stop as Sam continues to climb the door leading to Elias. He yelled suddenly that Sam needed to go see his ex-husband. Maybe that will give him the emotional shock he needs to stop feeling murderous.

Sam just shook his head. stopped looking at Alan. Steps to the bathroom.

Alan asks her to turn off the noise machine in a hushed voice when she goes out, which is a risky move. Sam walked towards Elias’ room again, but it wasn’t clear what he wanted. He then unplugged the engine, left the house, and got into his car.

Elias is crying in his room, and Alan sings “Country Roads” in a low voice to comfort him.

Finally he said, “My name is Elias.” “Elias Petraki.”

“I’m Alan. Strauss.”

Episode Analysis

The writing and directing team for The Patient gets better with each episode in how it uses the unique and minimalist style of the psychological thriller to create intense tension and drama.

Of course, the cast also deserves a lot of credit. Steve Carell is great. He’s utterly convincing as a calm and caring therapist, and then, at the drop of a hat, he’s compelling as a troubled prisoner about to lose it.

The show continues to come up with interesting ideas about therapy, especially when it tries to show how real therapists are by showing different sides of Alan’s personality in different settings. However, The Patient keeps its cards close to its chest in many ways.

Is Sam’s storyline about how anyone can change? Or to say that some of them are hopeless? We won’t know until we see what Sam does.
