“We struggled, a few miscarriages, IVF is not easy, especially for Deb,” Jackman recalled to Caegle.

So they chose adoption, bringing their son home Oscar in 2000 and a daughter Ava in 2005. Both children are biracial, a quality that Jackman and Furness deliberately sought when they began the process.

“Oscar is a little bit of everything: African-American, Caucasian, Hawaiian and Cherokee,” he said. A new idea in 2007. “We specifically asked for a biracial child because there was a greater need. People will wait 18 months to adopt a little blonde girl; meanwhile, biracial children refuse. The same goes for Ava, she’s half Mexican, half German.”

Jackman echoed this to Cagle years later, saying, “Our motivation for adoption was, ‘Where’s the need for that?’ Children of mixed race are most in need. I want to tell my kids that… it doesn’t matter what gender they are [orientation] You are, it doesn’t matter what job you do, it doesn’t matter if your hair is straight or curly, you are tall or short, male or female, what race you are. What defines you as a person lies beneath all of that.”
