Wilbur Dungy (1926–2004), who taught science at Jackson College, and Cleomae Dungy (1920–2002), who taught Shakespeare at Jackson High School, were Dungy’s parents. Dungy was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan. His father taught science at Jackson College and his mother taught Shakespeare at Jackson High School. During World War II, Wilbur was a member of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen while serving in the Army Air Forces. He flew combat missions. After graduating from Parkside High School in 1973, Dungy played college football at the University of Minnesota, where he was the lead starting quarterback for the Gophers in both 1975 and 1976. Dungy won a national championship with the Gophers in 1976. In 1977 he was presented with the Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is presented annually to a student-athlete from the senior class of each institution that is a member of the Big Ten conference and who has achieved both academic and as well as athletic excellence has shown time spent in college.
NFL career
After not being drafted, Dungy became a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was promoted to the defensive tackle position and played three seasons in the National Football League. Dungy is the youngest player in National Football League history to both intercept a pass and throw an interception while participating in the same game. When Terry Bradshaw and Mike Kruczek both went down injured in a Pittsburgh Steelers game against the Houston Oilers in 1977, Dungy stepped in as the Steelers’ backup quarterback.
