Career
early years
Her father first got Pennetta interested in tennis when she was just five years old. She was just 17 when she and compatriot Roberta Vinci won the French Open in girls’ doubles.
1997 was the year Pennetta competed on the ITF Women’s Circuit for the first time. The next year, she entered her first tournament to qualify for the main draw of a WTA Tour event and she was unsuccessful. The tournament was the Internazionali Femminili di Palermo. Pennetta found success on the ITF Circuit in 1999, winning two singles titles and two doubles titles.
