After the military took control of the country, he fled the country and lived in an ABSDF (Northern Branch) student rebel camp in Pajau on the Chinese border for almost four years. There he studied art with the Mandalay artist Sitt Nyein Aye.
In 1991 and 1992, he was detained in Pajau with some other students for almost nine months. During this time they were subjected to some of the most horrific physical attacks in the annals of the resistance movement.
Htein Lin, who consistently meditates using the Vipassana technique, draws a significant amount of his creativity from Buddhist concepts, stories and philosophy. Between 2006 and 2013 he lived in London but moved back to Burma in July of the same year.
Since his return he has used the new climate for reform to create a major documentary and interactive performance piece entitled A Show of Hands. As part of the play, hundreds of thousands of former Burmese political prisoners had their arms cast in plaster for the project.
