On September 16, video was captured of a moped engaged in a police chase in Queens crashing into an NYPD vehicle before catching fire. The incident happened after the moped was already engaged in pursuit.
According to a New York Post report, the incident took place around 12:30 a.m. after the moped was linked to an alleged shooting incident nearby. Public security officers circulated a broadcast directing other officers to obstruct traffic in order to arrest the moped driver.
Footage shows a moped crashing into an NYPD SUV blocking traffic. The SUV blocked the roadway. The rider of the motorcycle was taken to safety by intervening officers after the vehicle they were in exploded.
According to the Bronx News, the 34-year-old driver is currently being treated for minor head injuries at a Jamaica Avenue hospital. The driver’s status is reported as stable at this time. The audacity of the incident has raised concerns about rising crime rates in the city.
NYPD and Queens have seen a spike in shootings recently
After the collision, authorities searched the area for firearms and evidence of previous firing, according to a police department official. The representative further stated that the suspect involved in the collision was in possession of a firearm when the investigation was completed. However, it could not be determined whether he was involved in a shootout at the time. The investigation into the case is still ongoing.
However, state records show that Queens is no stranger to incidents of this nature, and this year the region has seen an increase in the number of shootings and other violent crimes. Additionally, the total number of gunshot wounds in New York City increased by 13.4%.
According to Kenneth Corey, the New York City Police Department’s department chief, the city’s homicide rate has fallen 54% through August 2022, but the city’s overall crime rate has increased 26%.
Corey also noted that the city is significantly less dangerous than it was in May 2022, when the department first began implementing its Summer Violence Reduction Plan. He went on to say that despite the homicide rate in New York City “slumping” in August, virtually all other major crime rates rose.
NYPD Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell suggested in an official statement that the rise in violence in the city could be linked to illegal guns encouraging criminals. Sewell made this claim in relation to the city.
Keechant went on to say that criminals “must face serious consequences” if they are willing to carry illegal guns and shoot at innocent people.
He pointed out that the only way to reduce crime in the city is to crack down on offenders and keep the police presence up. He also stated that whenever there is a crime that “undermines public confidence in the criminal justice system,” lawmakers should turn their attention back to the victims, as they are the ones who matter most.
According to CNN’s coverage, New York City has seen a gradual resurgence in crime after an all-time low in 2019, when the city recorded its lowest homicide rate in over half a century.
