Jack Whittaker and Jewel Whittaker, Robert’s devoted parents, gave birth to him.

Robert and his brother were enrolled in a Goju-ryu karate school by Jack. Robert, who was just seven years old, was in attendance. His father wanted to teach his children the value of restraint and self-defense.

After eight years of training, Tobert earned a black belt. His father then presented the Whittaker sons with the choice of giving up karate or switching sports. Robert’s siblings have decided to quit karate.

He is a former UFC Middleweight Champion and is now signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). A professional MMA fighter since 2009, Whittaker competed in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes and captured the welterweight championship. After winning the middleweight championship at UFC 213, Whittaker was promoted to the position of undisputed champion when Georges St-Pierre relinquished the title in 2017. He is currently ranked as the top middleweight in the UFC as of January 19, 2021.

Whittaker was born at Middlemore Hospital in Otahuhu, Auckland, New Zealand. His mother is of Mori and Samoan ancestry and his father is Australian with European blood. Whittaker’s father enrolled his brother and Robert, both aged seven, in a Goju-ryu karate class to help them learn self-control and self-defense. His father gave him the option to switch to another activity or give up karate after a little over eight years of training and achieving his black belt. After moving to Menai, Robert made the decision to join Henry Perez’s hapkido gym while his brother made the decision to quit. Shortly thereafter, Perez converted his gym into an MMA facility. Forced to take up MMA training, Whittaker became instantly hooked and decided that MMA was better than rugby league.

Whittaker would rather avoid talking trash outside of the octagon. As he says:

Mixed martial arts career

Whittaker joined Australia’s Xtreme Fighting Championships in 2008 and made his professional debut on March 14, 2009 against Chris Tallowin, who also made his debut. Whittaker’s TKO in the first round gave him the win. Whittaker continued his professional career at the Cage Fighting Championships, where he won 6-0 from 2009 to 2011, including a significant win over Ben Alloway, a cast member of TUF: Smashes.

While traveling to Cotai, Macau for the sixth edition of the Legend Fighting Championships on October 30, 2011, Whittaker suffered his first loss when he faced Hoon Kim and fell in the first round. Before his second loss to Jesse Juarez, Whittaker bounced back from the loss and won two straight fights, improving his overall record to 9-2.

Whittaker was nominated by his trainer Henry Perez for the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes in 2012, which pitted a team of eight Australians against a team of eight British men, and he was chosen to be one of the cast members.

Whittaker faced Luke Newman in his first match on the program. After 19 seconds, Whittaker hit Newman flush on the chin, knocking him unconscious for several minutes. With the win, he advanced to the semifinals. Whittaker received an additional $25,000 for Knockout of the Season for the knockout.

Whittaker faced Xavier Lucas, a backup fighter and another member of Team Australia, in the semifinals. Whittaker won the first round by KO 1:17. With the win, Whittaker advanced to the championship game that was broadcast live on UFC on FX: Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson.

Post-UFC Middleweight Championship

On March 7, 2020, Whittaker was scheduled to face Jared Cannonier at UFC 248. On January 15, 2020, it was revealed that Whittaker had withdrawn from the competition for an unspecified reason. Whittaker admitted in an interview that he completely gave up fighting and training at the end of April 2020 due to exhaustion.

On July 26, 2020, Whittaker and Darren Till competed at UFC on ESPN. He prevailed by unanimous verdict in the match.

At UFC 254 on October 24, 2020, Whittaker faced Jared Cannonier. He won the match unanimously.

Paulo Costa and Whittaker were scheduled to face off on April 17, 2021 at UFC on ESPN 22. Kelvin Gastelum took Costa’s place in the fight when Costa retired due to illness on March 16. Whittaker prevailed in the match by unanimous decision. He won the Fight of the Night award for this fight.

The UFC Middleweight Championship rematch between Whittaker and Adesanya took place on February 12, 2022 at UFC 271. Whittaker suffered a unanimous decision loss in the fight.

Around June 11, 2022, Whittaker was scheduled to fight Marvin Vettori at UFC 275. However, Whittaker resigned for an unexplained reason. The two were given a new date for their encounter at UFC Fight Night 209, September 3, 2022.

Freestyle wrestling career

When Whittaker popped up to compete in the Australia Cup in Canberra in 2015, he began competing in amateur freestyle wrestling. He won all three of his fights. Whittaker also raised the prospect of potentially representing Australia in Olympic or Commonwealth wrestling matches at the 2015 Australia Cup. He returned to the mat in May 2017, winning the 97 kg division of the Australian National Wrestling Championships. Whittaker competed in Australia’s 97kg qualifying competition for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in November 2017 after winning the national championship. On the Gold Coast, where he made his UFC debut, he would again win first place in his division, thereby qualifying to represent Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Whittaker stated after qualifying that he would only compete in the Commonwealth Games provided it didn’t conflict with his UFC commitments. Whittaker will be one of eight Australian wrestlers competing at the April 2018 Commonwealth Games, it was announced in March 2018. The UFC was concerned that an injury sustained during the Commonwealth Games would prevent Whittaker from fighting Yoel Romero for the middleweight championship at UFC 225 on June 9, 2018, forcing Whittaker to retire less than three weeks before the event withdraw from games to avoid losing his UFC championship title.
