According to Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West, Bordeaux had divorced her husband in April 2012 and was dating a man from her native Florida state when they met Holbert in Froggy Bottoms.
She and Holbert went to the bar for a night of drinking, karaoke, and billiards after her boyfriend left for Florida.
West alleges that Bordeaux became aware of Holbert’s status as a recognized sex offender later that evening. In the early hours of April 14, 2012, Holbert asked Bordeaux if they could spend more time together as they left the pub, but Bordeaux turned him down with a “snide remark about being a sex offender,” according to West.
West alleges that Holbert hit her, knocked her unconscious, dragged her to his car and drove her to his makeshift camp behind the bar. Bordeaux screamed as soon as she regained consciousness. Holbert “beat her until she stopped screaming, wouldn’t move,” the prosecutor claimed.
The next day, Holbert buried Bordeaux after driving into a nearby forest.
Authorities questioned Holbert several times after Bordeaux disappeared because he was the last person they saw. However, he insisted that he had only dropped Bordeaux off at their apartment complex that night and had no idea what happened afterwards.
According to West, Holbert neglected his responsibilities as a registered sex offender and as a result was imprisoned for a significant portion of 2012 and 2013. According to West, there was insufficient evidence, although some other inmates said he made derogatory statements about Bordeaux’s disappearance to support charges against him.
In late 2013, Holbert became friends with David Marshburn, a Smithfield private investigator working independently on the Bordeaux case. A few months later, Holbert drove Marshburn to Bordeaux’s shallow funeral.
W. David Smith Jr., a defense attorney, said in court Friday, “This situation is horrible. Smith claimed Holbert was drunk and just “snapped” when Bordeaux said he was a sex offender.
“He neglected his morals. He disregarded the basic spirit,” he said. Smith explained that during the protracted search for Bordeaux following her disappearance, Holbert repeatedly considered stepping forward and confessing, but eventually “lacked the confidence to do so because he realized what he had to face.”
