Robert Whittaker, at age seven, and his brother were enrolled by their father in a Goju-ryu Karate school to help them learn self-control and self-defense.
His father gave him the option to switch to another activity or give up karate after more than eight years of training and earning his black belt. Initial career Of Whittaker
Whittaker joined Australia’s Xtreme Fighting Championships in 2008 and made his professional debut on 14 March 2009 against Chris Tallowin, who was also making his debut. First-round TKO by Whittaker gave him the victory. Whittaker resumed his professional career with Cage Fighting Championships, where he went 6-0 from 2009 to 2011, including a significant victory over Ben Alloway, a cast member from TUF: Smashes.
When Whittaker traveled to Cotai, Macau for the sixth edition of the Legend Fighting Championships on October 30, 2011, he suffered his first defeat when he faced Hoon Kim and fell by first-round submission.
Before suffering his second defeat to Jesse Juarez, Whittaker recovered from the defeat and won two straight fights, improving his overall record to 9-2.
Whittaker was nominated by his coach, Henry Perez, for the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes in 2012, which pitted a team of eight Australians against a team of eight British men, and he was chosen as a cast member.

At UFC Fight Night 43 on June 28, 2014, Whittaker squared off against Mike Rhodes.

On November 8, 2014, Whittaker and Clint Hester squared off in a middleweight fight at UFC Fight Night 55.
He prevailed in the back-and-forth battle by second-round TKO. Whittaker’s first Fight of the Night bonus prize was also given to him for the victory.
On May 10, 2015, Whittaker and Brad Tavares squared off at UFC Fight Night 65.

After receiving a colitis diagnosis, former middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre gave up the title on December 7th, 2017.
Whittaker was elevated to the title of indisputable champion as a result.
