Endings Explained For House of Sand and Fog (2003): What leads to the tragic ending?
House of Sand and Fog Plot Synopsis
House of Sand and Fog is probably the only serious crime thriller ever written where no one has bad intentions. But the way the story is put together means that all the main characters will die in sad ways. The film is based on Andre Dubus III’s 1999 novel of the same name. The ending is so intense that few films (if any) can match it. Here, we look at what happened in detail.
Kathy Nicolo (Jennifer Connelly), a young woman with a broken heart, is shocked when she is evicted from her own home. Things take a turn for the worse when her house is accidentally sold to Massoud Amir Behrani, a former colonel in the Imperial Iranian Army (Ben Kingsley). Kathy tried several times, but failed, to get Behrani to give up the house.
She also has a relationship with Lester, a police officer played by Ron Eldard who takes pity on her. When Lester decides to help Kathy get her house back, things take a turn for the worse.
What is Behrani’s Stand?
Behrani is a man of strong morals. He seems so close to the edge that he can’t help Kathy even if he wants to. Behrani was a former colonel, so he and his family were used to being proud, respected, and living a full life. But since he had to leave Iran, his days of fame were over. So, he puts on a show to make his family think he is a successful businessman. However, in reality, he works many low-paying jobs to maintain the appearance of being rich and important.
He pays a quarter of the price for Kathy’s house. Then, after putting money into fixing it up, he plans to sell it for a profit. Behrani needed the house, but not as much as Kathy.
How does Lester get involved?
Lester is a police officer who helps get Kathy out of her house. Lester begins to love Kathy because he feels sorry for her, so he leaves his wife and children. Kathy’s only chance is Lester, so she does everything to get her house back. He still does more than he needs to. In one case, he went to Behrani’s house and told him that if he did not surrender the house, he would deport him to the US. Even though Lester doesn’t use any racial slurs, the movie makes him seem racist.
What was Behrani’s reaction?
Behrani is a former soldier, so he knows how things work. He does nothing to please Kathy or Lester. He tells Kathy that he will sell the house if she pays the price he sets.
After Lester said he had to leave the country, Behrani told Internal Affairs about it. They told Lester to change his behavior or lose his badge if he did it again. The man from Iran is strong and determined. He will not kneel for anything. But his family is his biggest weakness.
What leads to tragedy?
Kathy tries to kill herself with Lester’s sidearm, but fails. Behrani saw him outside his house and took him inside, where he passed out from intoxication. As Behrani and his wife try to get Kathy into the bedroom, Lester enters. Lester locks the entire Behrani family in the bathroom at gunpoint after misinterpreting what he saw.
Behrani plans to sell the house to save his family. He tells Kathy that he will give her the money if she agrees to give him the house back. Lester brought Behrani and his son Esmail to the country office as soon as possible. Esmail took out Lester’s gun and pointed it at him because he didn’t like the way his father was treated. When a policeman shows up, he doesn’t understand what’s going on and shoots Esmail.
The tragic, tragic ending
The ending of The House of Sand and Fog is one of the most shocking and intense we have ever seen. When Esmail dies in the hospital, it removes all reason for Behrani to stay alive. In the next scene, we go to Behrani’s house, where he poisons his wife’s tea and kills her. He thought that it would be easier for his wife to die of poison than to die of grief.
He carried her into the bedroom, dressed her in his decorated military uniform, and sat next to her corpse. In an incredibly powerful scene, Behrani sticks a clear plastic bag over her face and sucks herself in while holding her dead husband’s hand.
Who is to blame?
Lester is in jail. Kathy is still homeless. And every Behrani died. How can so much happen if not a single character can be called evil? However, each character has some things about them that are not good. Kathy is bored, Lester is angry, and Behrani doesn’t care about other people. So, that’s what the sand and fog did to the house.
In case you haven’t noticed, the film’s title means more than it seems to say. The sand and fog in the film represent two different sides of the conflict. The house is a symbol of damage, but it is not the perpetrator. Small nasty things are enough to cause a lot of damage. House of Sand and Fog is about that very thing.
