And, according to Rhodes, Mike finds a way to balance the truth about Tyson—including the highs of his boxing glory and the lows of his 1992 rape conviction—while making him feel human.

“It’s about being present and understanding that human complexity,” he said. “I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to convey this, to show myself in a special way.”

And it wasn’t just that Rhodes didn’t have access to the actual player he portrayed himself as Russell Hornsby, who plays controversial boxing promoter and former Tyson confidant Don King, told E! News he felt similar about the unfortunate lack of meeting the now 91-year-old.

“It would be great to sit down with Don over a cup of coffee, tea, etc.,” Hornsby told E!. “Sit with him for a few hours, all day, a couple of days a week, and just get a feel for what his thought process was, what he thought about, what he lived with.”
