Alex was spotted by scouts from the Rafael Nadal Academy, run by the 11-time Grand Slam champion himself, after he earned a wild card into the 2018 Roland Garros juniors tournament qualifiers.
The Filipina teen netter and her brother Miko finally got a scholarship, and since September 2018, they have been studying at the American International School of Mallorca, which is inside the academy.
Alex says that the academy is the best place for him to improve his tennis skills because he has a regular schedule of training and hitting with partners from all over Europe.
“I think the Academy helped me a lot. Since I moved, my tennis has gotten better, and I think my serve and confidence have gotten better as well,” she said.

But the Filipina only made it to the second round because she lost in straight sets to Australian Annerly Poulos.
Alex entered his second junior Grand Slam in 2020. He started the year as No. 9 player on the world juniors circuit, giving him a wild card into the main draw of the Australian Open.
Alex wants to do better than her last Grand Slam run, which she did when she reached the third round of the singles tournament.
But even though he lost in singles, Alex’s run at the Australian Open is not over yet. She and her longtime partner Priska Nugroho of Indonesia won the doubles title, making history.
With the win, Alex became No. 4 junior tennis player in the world for the first time in his career.

When Eala and Nugroho played the top-ranked pair of Kamila Bartone and Linda Fruhvirtova in the semifinals of the 2020 Australian Open juniors doubles, not many people thought they would fight.
But the Southeast Asian pair bounced back after losing the first set and came back from going down 7-1 in the tiebreaker to reach the finals.
Eala said of the tough semifinal match, “I don’t know if it was really a miracle.”
“There were times when I didn’t think I was going to win, but I kept my energy up and stayed positive the whole time.”
Eala and Nugroho easily defeated Slovenia’s Ziva Falkner and Britain’s Matilda Mutavdzic in the final, which lasted 49 minutes and was the shortest final match in Australian Open history.
