2013–2015: Beginnings and first album
In 2013, Fetty Wap expressed interest in pursuing a career in the music industry. He began his career as a rapper, but later decided to pursue a singing career as well because he “wanted to do something different.” He started his career as a rapper. On September 25, 2015, Fetty Wap’s debut studio album, titled Fetty Wap, was made available to the public. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, selling 129,000 equivalent album units in its first week of release (75,484 in pure album sales). After this, Fetty Wap came out with two new mixtapes, the first was titled Coke Zoo and featured French Montana and the Zoo Gang, while the second was titled ZOO 16: The Mixtape and also featured the Zoo Gang. At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, Fetty Wap was recognized with two nominations.

In an Instagram video posted on September 28, 2021, Fetty Wap gave a sneak peek of the song “Out The Hood.” The caption for the video reads “10/22 TBE,” prompting rumors of an upcoming single or mixtape release. Later, on October 13, 2021, Fetty Wap revealed the official cover art for the album “The Butterfly Effect,” indicating that it will be his second studio album and will be released six years after the release of his debut. After several mixtape releases and legal troubles, Fetty Wap reappeared on October 22, 2021, with the official release of this album, marking the beginning of his comeback. The name of the album is a tribute to his late daughter Lauren, from whom he took the inspiration for the name of the album as well as some of the songs.
