Who are Brandon Lafferty and Marty Thomas?

On April 26, 1986, Marty Thomas and her older sister, BB Beach, went to the Canyon to play. On the way, they stopped at the trailer of Marty’s brother, Donald Ellis “ET” Thomas, between 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. They encountered a small and scrawny man in the driveway when they arrived at the site on Shubuta Vossburg Road, which is about 11 miles west of Shubuta, Mississippi. He was armed with a revolver. Marty would later provide additional details about him, such as the fact that he had a shaved head, two front teeth were missing, and was wearing a blue shirt and sneakers.

The two teenage girls were held at gunpoint and marched to the back of the trailer, where they observed Donald’s silver Ford pickup, another attacker with a shotgun, described as a large black man, and a body lying on the ground . Marty quickly identified the body as that of her brother’s cousin, James Lamar Lafferty, and she knew without a doubt that he had been murdered. The girls were led into the mobile home, where they were horrified to find James’ two-year-old son, Brandon Lafferty, sitting on the couch in bloodied clothing. The girls were escorted out of the mobile home.

The perpetrator of the attack forced her to lie on her stomach on the floor while tying her hands and ankles behind her back with hay cords. Aside from that, he threatened to rape and kill them if they didn’t lie to the authorities and say the attackers were two black men. He demanded that they identify the suspects as black men. After that, he went to get a pitcher of tea from the fridge while his companion was still getting guns from the bedroom. After a while, both intruders got up and left, taking Donald’s truck with them.

The girls used their fingernails to cut the ties around their feet and then used a knife found in the kitchen to remove the ties around their hands. When they were satisfied no one was following them, the girls picked up Brandon and ran to a friend’s house, where Marty called authorities and told them her whereabouts.

Where are Brandon Lafferty and Marty Thomas today?

Both girls were terrified, so at first they lied to the police about who the intruders were and stuck with the story their attackers told them about two black men. However, when Marty discovered to her horror that her brother had also been shot dead, she cooperated with authorities by providing accurate descriptions of the intruders. Robert S. Minnick and James “Monkey” Dyess, who evaded the Clarke County Jail on the eve of the arrest, have been identified by police as responsible for the murders.

In the end, both perpetrators were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment; unfortunately one of them passed away in 2018 during his time. Marty was always there for Brandon growing up, but she waited to explain what happened to his father until he was old enough to fully understand. Even as a young child, Brandon had a nagging feeling that there was more to his family than he was told about them. As of this writing, it’s highly likely that both Brandon Lafferty and Marty Thomas lead lives hidden from the public eye in the state of Mississippi.
