Jazz was something on the mind of writer and filmmaker Tyler Perry as he began composing A Jazzman’s Blues. “Jazz has been the background music of my life in so many ways.” “Voices like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington and all these amazing, amazing artists have always been an inspiration to me,” he said. Perry remembered sneaking out of the house as a kid and going to his grandfather’s music bar to watch the customers enjoying themselves. As the film’s plot unfolded in his head, he became aware that he was simultaneously unconsciously reflecting on his own life. Explaining how music developed into a powerful narrative tool, he observed, “In moments of tragedy there was always music; and moments of wonderful happenings, there was always song and laughter and joy.”

Perry was looking for someone who could really embody the role of bayou because the film he was making was about music. In addition to strong acting skills, the actor playing this role had to be able to sing very well and demonstrate a high level of mastery of the art form in order to be cast. It turns out that Joshua Boone, who had previous acting experience on Broadway, was the ideal candidate to portray Bayou. He performed every song associated with his role.
