The midfielder has been promoting awareness of the condition since being diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) in 2017. Lenny has worked with the MND Association to raise funds and raise awareness of the disease since receiving his diagnosis.

Len also discussed the illness and possible career implications with players from various teams including Accrington Stanley and Blackburn Rovers.

Two of his friends founded the Len Johnrose Trust to help him achieve these goals and to provide financial support for him and his family.

We are devastated to learn of the death of former player Len Johnrose, Burnley FC said in a statement.

“Len passed away on August 15 after a protracted battle with motor neuron disease. Our condolences go out to Lens family and friends at this terrible time. Always be known as Claret Len.

His five years of battling MND and the harsh reality of living with it

Former midfielder Johnrose, who played nearly 400 Football League games while playing for Blackburn Rovers, Hartlepool, Bury, Burnley and Swansea City, first revealed his illness in 2018.

After originally going to the hospital with a non-healing fracture, he received a diagnosis in March 2017.

It was another six months, until August or September, before he found out the truth. Though not at an alarming rate, things progressed during those six months and he thought about it frequently.

Motor neuron disease affects four areas: the upper limbs, lower limbs, back, and throat, making swallowing difficult for a sore throat.

Father-of-three Johnrose said his health had deteriorated in February this year.

In an interview with the BBC, he also mentioned that two of his three children are still living at home. They found that he had difficulty walking due to the time he spent with them.

Similarly, he described his initial feelings at the diagnosis: “I had a bad feeling about it, but you look at Google and all the things you shouldn’t, and after about a week I remember calling my wife and saying : “I know what you’re looking for.”

What was Lenny Johnrose’s net worth before his death?

During his playing career, Johnrose may have had a substantial net worth, but after being told he had MND the value may have fallen as the family sought financial assistance and formed the Len Johnrose Trust.

He began his career essentially as a young trainee with Blackburn Rovers and later moved to Preston North End on loan. He was doing well enough during those times that Hartlepool United paid him £50,000 to sign him.

He was instrumental in Bury’s rapid promotion to the First Division and Stan Ternent invested £225,000 to bring Johnrose to his new team, Burnley.

He also made over 80 appearances for Burnley FC and nearly 200 for Bury during his playing career.

He spent some time teaching at St Silas CE Primary in Blackburn when not playing sports. Teachers and students participated in fundraisers for MND research.
