Because Georgian law at the time did not allow a life sentence without the possibility of parole, Melendi’s family is organizing campaigns and petitions to put Hinton behind bars for good, the site said.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a US congressman, helped Melendi’s family start a petition against Hinton’s release in 2011. According to the Miami Herald, 77,000 people signed the petition.
Shannon Melendi’s father, Luis Melendi, said he doesn’t believe Hinton killed his daughter, even though he knows he did.
“He is a more professional criminal than the police are a professional police officer,” he told ABC News. “He killed her and set her body on fire in the garden. The police searched the entire area, but they couldn’t find my daughter. That’s not what I think. When I’m sitting here, I don’t believe that.”
