In early March 2018, Lauren Karanek began taking dressage lessons at Michael Barisone’s farm in Washington Township, New Jersey. Barisone is a well-known dressage trainer. Additionally, she and her future husband, Robert Goodwin, have built their home on the property. Lauren and Michael’s relationship got off to a strong start, but by the summer of 2019, it had deteriorated past the point of no return. Michael insisted the couple leave the residence, but they insisted on staying there.
Michael claimed he feared for his life and shared this information with authorities in the moments leading up to the shooting. His attorney later claimed that Lauren and Robert implanted covert recording devices to torment him by recording his conversations and then releasing the recordings. The attorney went so far as to accuse the couple of reporting potential code violations, prompting an official visit the day before the shooting. Afterwards, Robert was accused of allegedly telling Michael to “get ready” while at the same time making the shape of a gun with his fingers.
On the morning of August 7, 2019, Michael removed a 9mm handgun from his work station and then drove to the apartment where Lauren and Robert were staying. As Lauren started talking to Michael, she noticed that Michael was hiding behind a bush near the back porch. She claimed Michael then pulled out a revolver and shot her twice after she confronted him. Robert claimed he saw Michael point a gun during their encounter. The coach also shot Robert, but his ball went wide and hit a pane of glass instead.
Lauren, who was shot, dialed 911 and named Michael as the person responsible for the shooting. Robert grabbed the phone and announced that he was on top of Michael, pinning him to the ground. Robert later testified that he first choked the trainer while Michael was turning and then punched Michael after Michael turned. By the time the cops arrived, Robert had Michael pinned under his weight. In the midst of the conflict, Robert suffered a broken wrist.

Despite the fact that Lauren and Robert testified in favor of the prosecution, the jury ultimately decided to side with the defense. Michael Barisone was found not guilty of the attempted murder of Lauren and Robert in April 2022; his defense of temporary insanity was successful and led to his acquittal.
