In October 1996, a young student with her whole life ahead of her was brutally murdered. Everyone involved in the case was deeply affected, and Berry Bryant’s family has struggled with the fallout ever since. The events leading up to Berry’s murder are detailed in Evil Lives Here: Shadows Of Death: The Dark Road on Investigation Discovery. Let’s investigate this case further, shall we?
How did Berry Bryant die?
In March 1978, Berry Alexis Bryant was born in Montana. She was seen as a well-rounded person throughout high school, participating in activities such as sports, band, and drill teams, among others. The saxophonist was considered a pleasant and compassionate person who got along well with everyone. He was a sophomore at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Berry became popular and made good friends in just a month of college.
The 18-year-old went to a school prom on October 5, 1996, followed by a party at a college dorm. Berry left the room at some point during the night, but little did she know she would never return. Later, other details helped authorities locate Berry’s body 16 miles outside of Powell. Lying on some dirt in a pool of blood, she had multiple defensive wounds, suggesting that she was engaged in a fierce battle with her attacker. Berry almost lost her head after having her throat cut so badly.
Who Killed Berry Bryant?
Berry didn’t come back and her roommate began to worry. The local hospital currently had no one by that name being treated there and her car was still in the parking lot. Investigation results showed Levi Collen, a 19-year-old teenager, was present with the other teenagers at the party. Berry was someone he knew from a previous conference. According to the show, Berry didn’t seem interested, although Levi appeared to be in love with her.
Berry and Levi were last seen leaving the celebration. Later, a bloodied Levi entered the hostel and claimed to have been involved in a fight with another man. He was bleeding at the time and had slight scratches on his body. Levi revealed to his friends that he killed Berry after raping her when they traveled there. They then arrested him and immediately called the police.
Levi initially offered a variety of accounts of what was happening. He stated they had consensual sex in his car as portrayed on the show before Berry jumped out and attacked him with a beer bottle. Levi defended himself by saying he stabbed her. The policemen asked him to take them to the body because they didn’t believe him. Levi admitted to the incident after giving instructions to Berry to the police.
According to Levi, he and Berry left the party together and traveled about 16 miles outside of Powell. He attempted to have intercourse with her but she refused as shown in the episode. Berry continued to fight as Levi swung his knife. She was then sexually assaulted before having her throat slit ear to ear and her body buried in a scrub. Authorities also received information from a second woman who was attacked by Levi sometime in the summer of 1995.
The woman claimed that while drinking with a companion, they bumped into Levi and ended up going for a ride together. Levi wanted to have sex with her, but she refused, according to the episode. He drove to a barren place, pointed a gun at her, and then raped her. The victim told police that the attacker bit her face and arms and threatened to kill her if she ever mentioned what happened to anyone.
