Adam Driver plays a college professor whose comfortable life in the suburbs is disrupted when a nearby chemical spill causes a “toxic incident in the air”, forcing him and his family to flee.

“I feel that something I took from the book and the movie is that, in a way, accepting death is perhaps a fuller life,” he says. “So I saw the structure of the movie as those people who are getting closer to death but also starting to open up to the concept of a more open life.”

However, unlike the heroes of the film, the director of “Marriage Story” admits that he did not fully master the same idea in his life.

“I can certainly say that intellectually,” he confesses. “Emotionally, I’m always frustrated with what I can do. Movies are always smarter than you… I’m a smart guy, but I can be smarter in movies than in life ”.
