Maria Ellen Cantwell, a politician and former entrepreneur from the United States, was born on October 13, 1958. She has been Washington’s junior senator since 2001. She previously served in the Washington House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993 and represented Washington’s first congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Cantwell attended and earned a degree from Miami University before moving to Seattle to work on Alan Cranston’s 1984 presidential campaign. She was selected for the Texas House of Representatives from 1986 to 1992 when she was elected to Congress. Cantwell served one term in Congress before losing her seat to Republican Rick White in the 1994 election. She then spent a brief stint as vice president of marketing at RealNetworks in the private sector.

Cantwell chose not to get involved in politics, but chose to run for the Senate in 2000. In one of the closest contests in state history, she upset incumbent Republican Slade Gorton. Cantwell won re-election in 2006, 2012 and 2018. When Jeff Sessions retired in February 2017, she rose to become the longest-serving junior senator to serve as US Attorney General. Cantwell was born in Indiana’s Indianapolis. She grew up in a primarily Irish-American area south of Indianapolis. Her father, Paul Cantwell, worked for US Representative Andrew Jacobs Jr., who was the 1979 Democratic nominee for Indianapolis mayor, as a district commissioner, councilman, senator, and chief of staff. Rose, her mother, worked as an executive assistant. She has Irish and German roots.

Cantwell graduated from Emmerich Manual High School and was honored with induction into the Indianapolis Public Schools Hall of Fame in 2006. After graduating from high school, Cantwell attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she majored in public administration and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.

In 1983, Cantwell relocated to Seattle, Washington to support the unsuccessful 1984 bid for US Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) for the Democratic presidential nomination. She then moved to Mountlake Terrace, a Seattle suburb, thinking it reminded her of Indianapolis, and in 1986 she successfully led efforts to create a new library there. Cantwell and her mother have lived in Edmonds, Washington since 2000.
