The path that Marcel took to be successful in this area was not easy. In an interview with Backstage, he explained he was homeless when he found out his first TV pilot, The Mayor, had been picked up on ABC for an entire season.

He and his fiancee, Amber, had been evicted from their home just days before hearing the wonderful news about the mayor.

The couple went to the local housing court, seeking a stay of eviction when they could not raise the money themselves. According to the court, they had ten days to do so. Two days later, he learned that The Mayer had been picked up.

He and Amber had enough money to buy her a ticket back to Texas. According to Marcel, Amber was supposed to stay while he looked for housing for her in Los Angeles.

Unexpectedly, he received a second call from his agency, telling him that Marcel had been cast in the play he auditioned for in April. Marcel would work the rest of the summer through the end of July when they flew him in to La Jolla, California in late May if he accepted.

Marcel suddenly found himself in possession of two jobs, one of which would provide him with housing for the summer and the other would provide him with the funds to move from New York City to Los Angeles. Before that he had no job, very little money and no place to stay.

Spears made her stage debut in New York in Shakespeare’s productions of Othello and Romeo and Juliet, where she played the title roles. He later appeared alongside Justin Long and Donald Faison in the world premiere of “Picasso in the Lapin Agile” at the Old Globe Theatre.
