He said in his statement that reading out a “hurtful” term was the primary cause of his departure. Former Sooners quarterback Gundy, who played for the team from 1990 to 1993, has worked as an assistant at Oklahoma State University since 1999.

Over the past 24 seasons, he has remained a fixture in the Sooners’ football program. From 1990 to 1993, Gundy quarterbacked the Sooners and threw for more than 6,000 yards and 35 touchdowns. In a single season at Oklahoma University in 1992, he created records with 1,914 passing yards. The next year, he broke those marks with 2,311 yards.

He left the university in 1994 after working there as a graduate assistant to coach quarterbacks and later running backs at Alabama-Birmingham. Gundy has a strong reputation as one of the best recruiters, and he was instrumental in keeping the job under Stoops and later Lincoln Riley. Gundy switched to coaching inside receivers in 2015.

“I want to be absolutely clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words,” Gundy said in reference to the event. We appreciate your dedication. Furthermore, we realize that by resigning, he put the program and the wellbeing of our student-athletes first. We are all responsible for our activities and the results they produce in life and in coaching.

Gundy said that the team, including the coaches, players, staff, and supporters, “does not deserve to be distracted by off-the-field issues while working to uphold the history of success that makes me so proud to be a Sooner.” “I won’t detract from that goal in order to do the program I love a harm. I am resigning with immediate effect,” Gundy stated in his statement. Regarding the incident that caused Gundy to retire, nothing else is known.
