Heupel was the head coach at the University of Central Florida (UCF) for three years. In his first year, the team scored 42.2 points per game. In his second year, they scored 43.4 points per game, and in his third year, they scored 6 points per game (43.2). Heupel was the quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners football team when he was in college. During his time in college, he was a unanimous All-American, won numerous awards, and led Oklahoma to the BCS National Championship in 2000. The beginnings

Heupel was born and raised in the town of Aberdeen in South Dakota. Cindy is the principal of her high school, and Ken is the head football coach at Northern State University. Heupel’s father took him to see movie games as a child.

He attended Aberdeen at Central High School, where he played football for the Central Golden Eagles. In 1994, in the second half of the first game of his sophomore year, he took over at quarterback for the Golden Eagles in a smaller version of the run-and-shoot offense. As a senior, he was selected as the best player in South Dakota. Heupel says, “It’s like I’m always the second or third person on their list.” Heupel received recruiting calls from major college football teams at the universities of Houston, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Heupel began playing in college when he attended Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He did not play in any games in 1996 and 1997 because he was a freshman, but he injured his ACL during spring training in 1998, dropping him down the team’s depth chart. He went to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and beat out Fred Salanoa to become the team’s starting quarterback. Even though he played with Salanoa, Heupel threw for 2,308 yards and 28 touchdowns. Utah State later offered him a scholarship, but he chose Oklahoma instead after meeting with the Sooners’ new head coach, Bob Stoops.

Heupel was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2000. He was also a Walter Camp Award winner, an All-American, and the AP Player of the Year. Heupel led the Sooners to a perfect season and the national championship by defeating Florida State in the 2001 Orange Bowl.

Heupel worked as an assistant coach for Oklahoma in 2004. He did so under head coach Bob Stoops. In 2005, Mike Stoops, Bob’s brother and an assistant coach at Oklahoma when Heupel played there, became the head coach at the University of Arizona. Mike hired Heupel as the tight ends coach.

In 2006, Heupel was hired by Oklahoma to work with the quarterbacks. In that role, he coached Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2008. On December 13, 2010, Heupel and Jay Norvell were named co-offensive coordinators at Oklahoma by head coach Bob Stoops. They replaced Kevin Wilson, who took the head coaching job at Indiana. After an 8–5 season that ended with a 40–6 loss to Clemson in the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl, Heupel’s contract was not renewed in January 2015.

After leaving Oklahoma, Heupel worked one season as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach for the Utah State Aggies. He then worked two seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Missouri Tigers.
