With the Kelowna Spartans of the BCHL in 1994–1955, Mitchell began his junior hockey career, scoring 11 points in 42 games. He played one season with Kelowna before joining the SJHL’s Melfort Mustangs. After his rookie season with Melfort in 1995-96, he was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the eighth round, 199th overall, of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. New Jersey Devils (1999–2001)

The Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars (2001–06)

After the switch, Mitchell became a full-time member of the NHL, playing 17 games for the Wild to finish out the regular season. He finished his first NHL season with one goal and 10 assists in 33 games with the Devils and Wild. In his first full season with the Wilds in 2001–2002, he scored three goals and 13 points in 68 games and earned $550,000 from his first rookie contract with the Devils. Three separate wrist, groin and shoulder injuries caused him to miss 14 games. Third at the club at 21:25 per game in average ice time, Mitchell played alongside Brad Bombardir in the team’s top-four defense. He improved to third-placed plus-13 on the team the next year, having finished -16 the previous season.

In 18 playoff games leading up to the 2003 semi-finals, he led the group with a +5 rating and continued to contribute to the team’s success. Due to a cheekbone injury sustained in the first round against the Colorado Avalanche, he was forced to play the remainder of the playoffs in a full-face helmet. After defeating the Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks in the first two rounds, the Wild fell to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in four games in the semifinals.

On June 30, 2004, The Wild sent Mitchell a qualifying offer; However, on July 7, Mitchell filed a request for arbitration.

The parties avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.775 million contract on August 12, 2004. However, Mitchell sat out the NHL lockout-shortened 2004-05 season.
