Dillon started his racing career in the Legend Cars Series and the Bandolero Mini Cars Series. A year later he began competing at Dale McDowell’s school on a dirt track.
2008: Camping World East series
Dillon won the 2008 NASCAR Camping World East Series Rookie of the Year Award. He first completed the entire schedule in the #3 Chevrolet while driving for Andy Santerre Motorsports; but after four events he joined his grandfather’s Richard Childress Racing team. In 13 races at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Dillon has finished ten times in the top ten, including one win.
2009-2011: Camping World Truck Series
The #3 truck hadn’t raced in any of the Big Three series since Dale Earnhardt Jr. fielded it in the Busch Series in 2002 when it made its Camping World Truck Series debut at Iowa Speedway.
During the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, Dillon was scheduled to start the Mountain Dew 250 at Talladega Superspeedway. However, the truck failed inspection, resulting in it being timed out and not qualifying for the race. Dillon would drive the #3 truck full-time in 2010 for Rookie of the Year, with sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops.
Dillon finished third and led 20 laps despite retiring early at Daytona, and clinched his first career pole at Texas Motor Speedway in June. For the first time since Bryan Reffner won for Team Menard at Texas Motor Speedway in 2000, Dillon won his maiden NASCAR race at the Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway on July 11. In 2012, Dillon only sparsely competed in the Sprint Cup Series. He started at Michigan International Speedway in June driving the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. He started the race from 21st place and finished 24th.
Dillon won the Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway on June 29, 2012, dominating it by leading all but 8 laps and winning by more than 9.8 seconds over second place. However, according to NASCAR authorities, the car was declared to have failed post-race inspection because the rear ride heights were too low.
In August 2012, Dillon competed in a single NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. While driving the #4 car for Fitzpatrick Motorsports, Dillon finished seventh.
2013
Dillon announced in August 2012 that he would continue to compete full-time in the Nationwide Series in 2013, with Advocare serving as the main sponsor for the entire campaign. He also competed in seven Sprint Cup Series events that year, including the 2013 Daytona 500 where he qualified eighth but finished 31st due to a crash late in the race. In January 2013, it was announced that Dillon would be competing in select Sprint Cup events that year in the Phoenix Racing No. 51 Chevrolet.
Dillon won the inaugural Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway after returning in the Truck Series. He led at race level for 63 laps. The NASCAR Hall of Fame houses the truck, trophy and famous dirt track section. Later that year, Dillon substituted for injured Brennan Newberry in the Truck Series competition at Chicagoland Speedway.
