Who Said What to Brandel Chamblee? PGA lawsuit for defamation and fraud
Patrick Reed has filed a lawsuit against Brandel Chamblee, continuing a protracted conflict in an unexpected turn of events. The lawsuit is valued at a staggering $750 million and, as predicted, social media has reacted furiously. Look at the specifics.
Who Said What to Brandel Chamblee? PGA lawsuit for defamation and fraud
Patrick Reed sued Brandel Chamblee and Golf Channel for defamation, seeking $750 million in damages.
Reed has argued in US District Court that Chamblee’s planned and malicious attacks had a direct impact on his livelihood. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants conspired with the Tour to harm LIV Golf.
Reed has claimed Chamblee has called him a cheater in the past. Chamblee has also criticized Reed and other golfers for leaving the PGA Tour for the Greg Norman-led, Saudi Arabia-sponsored LIV Golf Series.
The case also includes a long list of epithets and remarks Reed overheard entering golf competitions, most of which accused him of cheating.
“Mr. Reed is known to have been assaulted and endured more than any other golfer on tour by fans or bystanders, who were allowed to shout profanity just to be commended by NBC Golf Channel,” the lawsuit reads.
The 32-year-old professional golfer has competed in two LIV events to date, finishing fifth in New Jersey and third in the competition outside of Portland two weeks ago. Dustin Johnson has led his team to wins in both competitions.
Patrick also competed in the British Open at St Andrews and finished 47th. As part of the International Series, he took part in a comparable competition last week in South Korea and this week in Singapore. With several of its players participating in Asian Tour sponsored tournaments, LIV Golf supports the series.
Brandel Chamblee allegations and the lawyers’ perspective
On Tuesday night, Patrick Reed, a former PGA Tour competitor in the LIV Golf Series, filed a defamation lawsuit against Brandel Chamblee and Golf Channel.
The federal court for the Southern District of Texas received the lawsuit Tuesday. Patrick Reed’s disciplinary files should be included in the investigative process, according to Brandel’s attorney, Mr. Mohanan.
Reed, the 2018 Master Champion, claims that Chamblee and the network have actively pursued him for nearly a decade (since he was 23) to tarnish his reputation, foment hostility and make his job uncomfortable.
Reed went on to explain that the whole thing was done to defame his reputation and achievements as a young, accomplished, world-class golfer. Patrick transitioned from the PGA Tour to the LIV Golf Invitational Series earlier this year.
Reed has had a reputation on the PGA Tour for being a fighting player for quite some time. Despite a sizeable offer, he left the PGA and joined Saudi Arabia-funded rivals LIV Golf. He’s also been in the spotlight for a number of cheating scandals.
He was caught on tape the day before the 2019 Presidents Cup misaligning his lie in a bunker, costing him two shots and earning a harsh reprimand from Chamblee. These two golfers have had a protracted dispute, and the new lawsuit has made the whole situation worse.
