Obituary: Cesar Echaverry’s death after being shot

Police officer Cesar Echaverry tragically died Monday night after suffering injuries in a shooting in Miami. The incident happened just after 8 a.m. in Liberty City, near 67th Street and 17th Avenue.

The department alleges Miami-Dade Police stopped a white car linked to a previous robbery, but the driver refused to get out of the vehicle.

The driver then fled and struck a car with a passenger about ten blocks away after running over a couple of police cars.

A gunshot that followed the collision left one of the department’s investigators seriously injured, according to police.

After Cesar Echaverry was shot, the gunman was pronounced dead on the spot. Echaverry, a five-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, was given command of the department that investigates robberies.

The Miami Herald claimed his buddies said he was stepping up and getting married.

According to the publication, Monday’s shooting wasn’t his first near-death experience. In March 2018, Echaverry was a passenger on a police cruiser that rammed another car, killing its 45-year-old driver.

Robbery suspect identified

Echaverry was shot in the head while trying to apprehend robbery suspect, Jeremy Horton, in Miami.

Police reported that a white car involved in an armed robbery attempted to flee collided with two police vehicles and an unmarked vehicle, the three occupants of which were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The white car was then followed by Echaverry and other law enforcement personnel. Jeremy Horton, the driver, was shot and tragically died right there. He was 32 and from Acworth, Georgia.

Horton was arrested in South Florida on August 8 for driving without insurance, having an expired license plate and having a driver’s license that was suspended in Georgia, according to Golden Beach Police Chief Rudy Herbello.

During Wednesday’s game, the Miami Marlins dedicated a jersey with Echaverry’s name and number nine on the back.

Upon learning of Cesar Echaverry’s loss, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who spent time in the hospital prior to his death to comfort his family and friends, expressed her “heartache.”
