Why did Matt Sullivan die? Was it suicide? A missing Charlotte was found in McAlpine Park
Matt Sullivan, who was last seen at McAlpine Creek Park in southeast Charlotte, was found dead there, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, Sullivan went to McAlpine Creek Park on Monroe Road at 1:45 p.m. Friday after telling his family about his plans. He promised to come back in a few hours, but his family never heard from him again.
Off Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte is a sizable park and green space called McAlpine Creek Park. It is home to a lake, a fishing pier, soccer fields and a dog park, as well as hiking and biking trails.
Is Matt Sullivan’s Death Suicide-related?
A statement from Matt Sullivan’s family said: “He enjoyed his Friday afternoon walks and frequently visited McAlpine Creek. He has a reputation for venturing off the beaten track and is a man who is always looking for new experiences.” Investigators say there is no evidence of criminal activity and no suspects are being sought.
Since the exact cause of death is not clear, we cannot say that he committed suicide.
When Sullivan didn’t come home Friday, the paper claims the park was searched and his car found at the trailhead. Both his phone and wallet were found and both examined.
In a document shared on social media on behalf of the family, friends and family claimed that a thorough search was carried out by over 100 volunteers and teams of experts on Saturday.

Matt Sullivan was last seen near McAlpine Creek Park, a sizable park and greenway area off Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte, around 1:45 p.m. Friday, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. According to authorities, Sullivan was reported missing after failing to return home after promising his family he would shortly.
