After Holder’s hire was announced, people on Facebook were happy and tried to name all the African-American sports reporters and anchors who were on the local TV.

In the mid to late 1960s, Ernie Warlick, a former Buffalo Bill, was the first African American to work as a sports anchor in western New York. He worked briefly with WGR-TV (channel 2) and is in the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Billy Vargas was on WIVB-TV (channel 4) in the mid to late 1990s, Joe Major was on WKBW-TV (channel 7) around 2000, and Bremante Bryant was on cable’s former Empire Sports Network from 2000 to 2003. just other regular black sports reporters or anchors on local TV that immediately come to mind. (People on Facebook pointed out that Fox Sports reporter Pam Oliver worked as a news reporter for Channel 4 in Buffalo.)

Since all other African-American sports anchors and reporters before Holder were men, she is the first African-American woman to be hired by a local TV station for the job.

This does not mean that Holder was hired because of her skin color or because she is a woman. Channel 2 said she was chosen for the job from a pool of 100 applicants.

On her long list of jobs, she has worked for the CBS Sports Network and a CW affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina.
