In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, available on Prime Video, audiences are transported back in time to a time before the Rings of Power were made and Sauron had not yet manifested in his full form . In the third installment we are introduced to the realm of Numenor, set in a time when hostility towards the elves is gaining momentum and the kingdom is in turmoil with Galadriel’s arrival. With Tar-Palantir, King of Numenor unable to lead the realm, his daughter takes control of the government and assumes the role of regent. It quickly becomes apparent that Miriel is a formidable opponent who undoubtedly needs Middle-earth on her side. She is also someone not to be underestimated.

Galadriel finally achieves her goal of convincing the Queen to sail to Middle-earth and fight Sauron’s growing threat in the fifth installment of the series. However, before Miriel can leave Numenor, her father warns her and begs her not to go. He tells her to stay. He warns her that she will only find darkness there. Does this mean that if Miriel continues to engage in a full blown war against Sauron, she is putting herself in a position where she will be killed? let’s find out MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

Will Queen Regent Miriel die?

One of the aspects of prequels is that a large number of characters have their futures already decided, which often makes the events of their stories much more heartbreaking. A similar ending awaits Miriel, but getting there will be a difficult and bloody road. However, that end is not far away. It will not be the end of Miriel’s journey, although her father is correct in assuming that his daughter and all who followed her to Middle-earth will face a darkness surpassing anything that has come before. At least not according to the records that were kept. However, it is common practice for television adaptations to deviate somewhat from the original source material, and Rings of Power offers plenty of room to view Miriel’s story from a slightly different perspective than that presented in the book.

Miriel is portrayed in the books as the legitimate heir to the throne of Numenor, following in the footsteps of her father Tar. However, Palantir’s position as queen is assumed by Pharazon, her cousin. In the Amazon series, it has already been hinted that Pharazon could usurp Miriel’s authority and take over the rulership of the Amazons. We can observe the power he wields over the general populace and how easily he can change their attitudes. Also, they seem to believe in him more than their own queen. In fact, it is his own son who suggests that he disregard the instructions Miriel gave him and avoid going to Middle-earth. Pharazon has shown a more loyal side to the queen for now; Still, his political brain is evidently capable of thinking beyond just following in his cousin’s footsteps. What role does this play in determining Miriel’s future?

Contrary to what would have transpired in a similar reality to Game of Thrones, Pharazon does not end Miriel’s life after assuming the throne of Numenor himself. Instead, she lives to see another day. It is unfortunate for Miriel that she must live long enough to witness the destruction of her island kingdom at the hands of the wrath of Valar, alluded to earlier in the program. In her visions, Miriel sees a massive wave sweeping across Numenor, wiping out everything in its path. She then tells Galadriel about it, and Galadriel believes that this calamity can be averted if Numenor marches to Middle-earth and stops the advance of evil there.

Neither know that Numenor would be destroyed by this action. This is the event that will bring about the end of Numenor. In a previous conversation with Elrond, Gil-galad had mentioned the possibility that Galadriel might end up fanning the flames of the very evil she was trying to quench. This will turn out to be the case in a number of ways. When Sauron is finally brought to Numenor, he will encourage Pharazon, now the king, to march into the forbidden realms of Valinor, which will result in the wrath of the Valar. This will cause Pharazon to lose his kingdom. Miriel will still be alive when the waves first smash Numenor, and this will be the moment that will mark the end of her life.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The novel The Lord of the Rings and its appendices were written by JRR Tolkien and served as inspiration for the American fantasy television series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The show was created by showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay for the streaming service Prime Video. It is set in the second age of Middle-earth, which predates Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by thousands of years. Amazon Studios, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema are collaborating on the production and have consulted with Tolkien Estate throughout the process.

In November 2017, Amazon spent $250 million to acquire the television rights to The Lord of the Rings, committing to produce at least five seasons of at least $1 billion worth of content over the course of the deal. If it does, it will become the most expensive television series ever produced. In July 2018, Payne and McKay were hired for their positions. Tolkien’s grandson, Simon Tolkien, was contacted during the development process of the series, which is primarily based on The Lord of the Rings appendices. These appendices contain a discussion of the Second Age. It is not a sequel to the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit film trilogies as that is one of the requirements of the deal Amazon has with the Tolkien estate. Despite this, the production attempted to evoke the films by using a production design comparable to that of the films, younger versions of characters from the films, and a main theme composed by Howard Shore, who also composed the music for both trilogies. The music for the series was composed by Bear McCreary. Filming for the show’s first season, which consisted of eight episodes and had a huge international cast, took place between February 2020 and August 2021 in New Zealand, the country where the films were produced. Due to the widespread COVID-19 pandemic, production came to a standstill for a few months during this period. Amazon has moved production to the UK for the upcoming seasons, and filming for season two is expected to begin in the UK in October 2022.

On September 1, 2022, the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power were made available on Amazon Prime Video. According to Amazon, these episodes had the most viewers ever for a Prime Video launch. The remaining eight episodes of the first season can be viewed online until October 14. The storyline, photography, graphics, and musical score all received particular acclaim from reviewers, while the film’s pacing singled out some of the negative feedback.
