Early years

At the same time that The Real Live was playing Brady Bunch in New York, Beth Cahill and Melanie Hutsell, who played Marcia and Jan Brady in “The Real Live Brady Bunch,” were hired as cast members for Saturday Night Live. Richter went to after-show parties with SNL friends. There he met SNL writer Robert Smigel. Two years later, Smigel hired Richter as a writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien, a new show he was making. And I was interested.”

Richter resigned from Late Night in 2000 to try to become a film and TV actor. Andy Richter Controls the Universe, which aired twice mid-season on Fox, was his first major project.
